Armenia blocks 213 tons of Iranian watermelons over high nitrate levels

Armenia has blocked the import of 213 tons of watermelons from Iran due to excessive nitrate levels. According to Anush Harutyunyan, head of public relations at the Food Safety Inspection Body (FSIB), the unusually large volume of imports this year, combined with seasonal risks, prompted authorities to test 557 tons of Iranian watermelons.

Lab results showed nitrate levels exceeding permitted limits, though officials emphasized it does not necessarily mean the fruit is hazardous.

Further test results on the remaining shipments are expected by the end of the week. Importers of the rejected batches must either return the watermelons or destroy them.
