West Nile fever case confirmed in Armenia

On June 3, Armenia recorded its first laboratory-confirmed case of West Nile fever, according to the Ministry of Health. West Nile virus is mainly transmitted to people through the bites of infected mosquitoes.

The virus has a marked seasonal pattern, typically surfacing between June and October, coinciding with favorable conditions for mosquito breeding and spread.

Approximately 80% of infected individuals show no symptoms. However, when symptoms do develop, they may include headache, muscle aches, rash, joint pain, and dizziness. In severe cases, the virus can lead to complications such as meningitis, encephalitis and signs of damage to the central or peripheral nervous system.

Experts from Armenia’s National Center for Disease Control and Prevention continue to carry out entomological studies.
