Armenian FM calls for simultaneous peace treaty finalization and Minsk Group dissolution
Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan has described the conclusion of peace deal negotiations between Armenia and Azerbaijan as a significant step forward.
“We have reached a crucial and unprecedented milestone, agreeing on the text of a peace treaty. Both Armenia and Azerbaijan have confirmed that negotiations on the document have concluded and a mutually acceptable text is now in place,” Mirzoyan said at parliamentary debates on the execution of the 2024 state budget on Thursday.
He noted, however, that Azerbaijan has set additional preconditions, including the dissolution of the OSCE Minsk Group.
“This is understandable and acceptable,” the minister said. “Once a peace agreement is signed, effectively bringing the conflict to an end on paper, an international structure dealing with it will no longer be necessary.”
Mirzoyan underscored that some technical details remain to be resolved. He also stressed that Armenia believes the conclusion of the peace treaty and the OSCE Minsk Group dissolution should occur simultaneously.
