Geopolitical shifts endanger Armenia's security, MP warns

Armenian opposition lawmaker Tigran Abrahamyan has voiced concern over increasing regional instability, warning that Iran’s shifting priorities could jeopardize Armenia’s security.

“Several days ago, a senior Iranian official declared that the issue of the so-called ‘Zangezur Corridor’ had been closed thanks to Iran’s efforts,” Abrahamyan wrote on Facebook on Saturday. “Yet shortly after, Iran entered a new phase of hostilities, signaling difficult days ahead not only for Iran but for the entire region.”

Abrahamyan, who represents the Pativ Unem faction, emphasized that his remarks were not intended to draw a direct link between the recent developments and the Israeli aggression against Iran.

“The issue lies elsewhere,” he stated. “Iran has been one of the few – if not the only – countries actively working to block the Turkish-Azerbaijani tandem's push for the opening of a corridor – a major challenge for Armenia. With Iran now deeply engaged on another front, we must ask: what comes next?”

While Abrahamyan does not claim the corridor issue had been entirely removed from the agenda, he warns that Iran’s current “preoccupation” creates a dangerous situation.

“Russia also plays a significant role in the region, but its entanglement in the Ukraine conflict makes the situation all the more precarious for Armenia,” the MP added.
