Analyst: Turkey's influence in South Caucasus growing

Political analyst Suren Sargsyan claims that the collapse of U.S.-Iran negotiations due to the outbreak of war between Israel and Iran has deprived Armenia of significant benefits. He says an agreement between Washington and Tehran, much like a breakthrough in U.S.-Russia relations, would have had positive implications for Yerevan.

“These developments are of vital importance for Armenia,” Sargsyan wrote on Facebook on Tuesday. Their failure and the subsequent weakening of both Russia’s and Iran’s positions and influence in the South Caucasus, especially against the backdrop of the United States' passive stance, is disrupting the already fragile balance of power in the region."

He warned that Turkey is emerging as a more powerful and influential actor in the South Caucasus, advancing its regional agenda through Azerbaijan.

“This also concerns the so-called ‘Zangezur Corridor,’ which not only aims to connect Azerbaijan and Turkey, but also serves as a strategic link uniting the entire Turkic world,” the expert said.

"If U.S. President Donald Trump announces support for military action against Iran or provides Israel with unprecedented military aid in the coming days, the situation will become even more complicated for Armenia," Sargsyan added.
