Samvel Karapetyan detained for two months

Famous businessman and philanthropist Samvel Karapetyan has been remanded in custody for two months.

The Yerevan Court of General Jurisdiction granted the investigator’s motion to detain him late on Wednesday.

According to his lawyer, the defense has not yet reviewed it but will definitely appeal the decision.

Karapetyan has bee charged with making public calls to seize power in the country after expressing strong support for the Armenian Apostolic Church amid the Armenian leadership's campaign against it.

“I have always stood with the Armenian church and people,” he said in a video released Tuesday. “If the politicians do not succeed, we will intervene in our own way in this campaign against the church.”
