Armenian MP: Tensions escalate in Azerbaijan's relations with Iran and Russia

Azerbaijan's growing regional ambitions following its victory in the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh war have become one of the main drivers of rising tensions with Iran and Russia, according to Armenian opposition lawmaker Tigran Abrahamyan.

In a social media post on Wednesday, the Pativ Unem faction MP noted that Azerbaijani-Russian relations have entered a "new phase of confrontation", marked by a wave of arrests in both countries. The detentions, particularly in Russia, have been accompanied by reports of violence and humiliation, he added.

“In recent days, Iran has also issued high-level accusations against Azerbaijan, alleging that Baku provided its territory to facilitate Israeli operations,” he wrote. “Although the situation appeared to be settled on the surface, the political aftershocks are likely to persist.”

The opposition MP argues that Baku’s post-war confidence has led to a dramatic expansion of its geopolitical aspirations, drawing concern even from its close ally, Turkey.

“The Aliyev regime's whims have prompted harsher reactions from Tehran and Moscow,” Abrahamyan emphasized.
