Businessman and philanthropist Samvel Karapetyan will remain in pre-trial custody following a decision by the Yerevan Court of Appeals. Judge Armen Danielyan upheld the June 18 ruling by the Yerevan Court of General Jurisdiction ordering a two-month pre-trial detention for Karapetyan, Pastinfo reported.
Karapetyan's defense team had initially appealed the decision but later withdrew their complaint. However, the court proceeded with the case after the prosecution also filed an appeal, which Judge Danielyan accepted. Ultimately, the detention order was left unchanged.
Karapetyan has been charged with making public calls to seize power in Armenia. The charges are widely condemned as politically motivated.
