Mother of 8-month-old baby transferred to Abovyan prison

Liana Harutyunyan, a young mother who has been remanded into custody for three months, has been moved to the Abovyan Penitentiary along with her 8-month-old baby.

Speaking live from outside the facility on Saturday, lawyer Zaruhi Postanjyan said, “I’m waiting for the opportunity to meet with Liana. The little one will likely join her.”

According to Postanjyan, Harutyunyan’s older children have been temporarily relocated to their grandmother’s home in a village, while the infant was brought to the penitentiary on Friday evening to remain with the mother. 

Several MPs have expressed readiness to act as guarantors for the woman's early release.

Harutyunyan’s arrest was ordered by judge Arshak Matevosyan of the Shengavit District Court of General Jurisdiction. Initially questioned as a witness, she was later charged in a case involving illegal migration of Indian nationals.

Postanjyan told Panorama.am that Harutyunyan’s involvement was limited to providing translation services on seven occasions.
