Scorching summer heat can pose serious health risks, particularly for people with cardiovascular diseases and diabetes. Armenia’s Ministry of Health warns that high temperatures strain the heart and blood vessels, accelerate fluid loss, and can cause fluctuations in blood pressure, either raising or lowering it unexpectedly.
This is especially dangerous for people with hypertension, heart failure and diabetes.
For Those with Cardiovascular Conditions:
✔ Stay Hydrated: Drink 1.5 to 2 liters of water daily—even if you don’t feel thirsty.
✔ Avoid Peak Sun Hours: Limit exposure to direct sunlight between 11:00 AM and 5:00 PM.
✔ Dress Smart: Wear light-colored, breathable clothing and a hat to protect yourself from the sun.
✔ Monitor Blood Pressure: Check your blood pressure once or twice a day.
✔ Consult Your Doctor: Talk to your physician about adjusting medications or dosages during heatwaves.
✔ Seek Medical Help if Needed: If you experience weakness, chest pain, or dizziness, consult a healthcare provider immediately.
For Individuals with Diabetes:
✔ Monitor Blood Sugar: Keep a close eye on glucose levels throughout the day.
✔ Store Insulin Properly: Ensure insulin and glucose meters are kept in cool, appropriate conditions.
✔ Limit Physical Activity: Reduce intense physical exertion during extreme heat.
✔ Respond to Symptoms: If you feel unwell, check your blood sugar and seek medical assistance if necessary.
General Tips for Everyone:
✔ Use Air Conditioning or Fans: Maintain a cool indoor environment to prevent overheating.
✔ Eat Light and Fresh: Include plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet.
✔ Avoid Heavy Foods: Reduce intake of fatty, salty, and smoked foods.
✔ Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water. Avoid sugary juices and carbonated drinks.
✔ Plan Activities Wisely: Schedule outdoor walks in the early morning or late evening hours when it’s cooler.
