Russia supports Armenia-Azerbaijan direct dialogue – Foreign Ministry

Russia supports a stable, secure and peaceful South Caucasus and remains committed to helping Armenia and Azerbaijan reach a lasting peace, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova told a press briefing on Thursday.

In response to recent Western optimism, particularly from the U.S. and EU, about an imminent peace deal between Armenia and Azerbaijan, Zakharova emphasized Russia's long-standing efforts in the peace process. She recalled that in 2020, with direct involvement of President Vladimir Putin, Russia helped launch a roadmap for normalization between the two countries, which included peace treaty negotiations, border demarcation, reopening of regional transport routes and civil society dialogue.

Zakharova noted that at some point, Armenia and Azerbaijan chose to engage in direct bilateral talks and Russia respects their decision. "After all, what matters is that they find a way to negotiate and live side by side," she said, adding that Russia remains ready to offer support, including hosting further talks or a potential signing ceremony.
