Political analyst warns Armenian president's statement aligns with Azerbaijani agenda

Political analyst Suren Surenyants has raised concerns over Armenian President Vahagn Khachaturyan’s recent remarks in Syunik Province, where he claimed that opening a 43-kilometer road would unlock major development opportunities for Armenia and transform Syunik into a “gateway of progress”.

In a social media post on Thursday, Surenyants argued that linking Armenia’s economic future to a single transport route, especially one championed by Azerbaijan as the “Zangezur Corridor”, is both unrealistic and politically risky. He warned that this narrative dangerously echoes Baku’s agenda, potentially legitimizing it from within.

“The opening of transport routes can bring some transit benefits, but there’s no serious economic analysis proving that it will turn Armenia into a regional hub. Development requires a comprehensive economic strategy, not dependence on one road,” Surenyants stressed.

He further emphasized that any transport route through Armenian territory must remain under Armenia's jurisdiction and comply with its legislation.

“Vahagn Khachaturyan’s statement is anti-state and unconstitutional, raising the question of whether he has the right to serve as Armenia’s president,” he added.
