MP: Political persecution will continue in Armenia under current government

Opposition lawmaker Tigran Abrahamyan has strongly criticized Armenia’s authorities for the ongoing crackdown on their critics, including opposition politician Armen Ashotyan.

In a social media post on Saturday, the Pativ Unem faction MP warned that political persecution will persist in Armenia as long as the current leadership remains in power.

"Armen spent 15 months in prison and nearly 11 months under house arrest, with severe restrictions on his political activity," Abrahamyan wrote. He noted that although the court recently replaced Ashotyan’s house arrest with administrative supervision, prosecutors have already announced plans to appeal the ruling.

Abrahamyan argued that the government’s determination to pursue the case against Ashotyan is part of a broader campaign to silence dissent. "The charges against him remain in place and he has not been acquitted," he emphasized.

"As long as the current government remains in power, the number of political prisoners will only increase and the persecution of political dissidents will continue. Freedom to all political prisoners!" the MP concluded.
