Analyst: Trump administration unhappy with Armenia's renewed push on Palestine

Political analyst Suren Sargsyan claims that U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration is increasingly displeased not so much with Armenia’s recognition of the State of Palestine last year, but with Yerevan’s renewed efforts to promote the issue on the international stage.

“There’s a growing perception that this isn’t Armenia's sovereign decision, but rather a move influenced by French President Emmanuel Macron,” Sargsyan wrote on Facebook on Saturday.

He pointed to the ongoing tensions between the U.S. and its allies, particularly France, over Middle East policy.

“I believe Armenia has gained nothing in return. Whereas, the authorities have received a tweet from Macron signaling support at least in domestic political matters,” Sargsyan stated.

While refraining from debating the merits of recognizing Palestine, which he described as a separate matter, Sargsyan raised concerns about the timing and rationale behind Armenia’s renewed engagement.

“Why drag Armenia into an increasingly volatile international matter that has now impacted the relationship between Trump and Macron?” he asked.

The analyst criticized Armenia’s recent statements at the United Nations, particularly references to Christian heritage in the Holy Land.

“Is it really appropriate to stand at the UN podium and declare, 'As one of the world’s oldest Christian nations, we place special importance on preserving Christian heritage in the Holy Land.' Don’t these people even follow the international media?" Sargsyan added.
