Drug smuggling attempt foiled at Armenian border crossing

Armenia's customs officers have thwarted an attempt to smuggle methamphetamine into the country through the Agarak border checkpoint.

In a statement on Thursday, the State Revenue Committee (SRC) said intelligence was received from the Police Criminal Investigation Department that an Armenian citizen was planning to smuggle narcotics into the country. Acting on the report, the SRC’s Anti-Smuggling Department placed the individual under surveillance.

During customs inspection, officials discovered two pillows inside the traveler’s luggage. Each contained a transparent polyethylene package filled with a crystalline white substance resembling methamphetamine. In total, around 510 grams of drugs were seized.

The suspect has been arrested and transferred to the Investigative Committee’s Syunik regional department, where a criminal case has been launched.
