Analyst: Erdogan disagrees with Pashinyan's peace claims

Political analyst Hakob Badalyan claims Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's latest statement indicates a disagreement with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's narrative on regional peace.

“I believe that the South Caucasus will find the peace it has long been seeking,” Erdogan announced on Wednesday.

According to Badalyan, his statement contradicts Pashinyan’s repeated claims that peace has already been achieved, a message he has been promoting since August 8.

Badalyan argues that while Pashinyan refers specifically to Armenian-Azerbaijani peace, Erdogan is speaking of the South Caucasus as a whole.

“Peace in the region is indivisible; it either exists comprehensively or not at all,” Badalyan wrote on Facebook, adding that Erdogan’s remark signals Turkey’s dissatisfaction with the U.S.-brokered framework of the August 8 Washington Declaration.

The analyst further suggested that Erdogan’s recent meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin was likely an attempt to understand U.S.-Russia understandings and their relation to the August 8 agreement.
