New poll shows majority of Armenians remain skeptical about lasting peace with Azerbaijan

A new poll shows that a majority of Armenians remain skeptical about the prospects of lasting peace with Azerbaijan despite the recent signing of a declaration in Washington.

According to results published by Gallup International Association’s exclusive representative in Armenia, MPG LLC, and its director Aram Navasardyan, 55% of respondents said they do not believe the declaration will help establish durable peace between the two countries.

The nationwide telephone survey, conducted from August 25 to 30 with a sample of 1,101 adults, revealed mixed public reactions to the signing of the declaration on August 8 in Washington. While 22.8% of participants viewed the event very positively and 19.3% rather positively, more than a third (34%) expressed negative attitudes – 13.6% rather negative and over 20% firmly negative. Meanwhile, 7% found it difficult to answer and 3.3% admitted they were unaware such a declaration had been signed.

Nearly 60% of those surveyed voiced opposition to the opening of a transport route for Azerbaijan through Armenia’s Syunik Province.
