Serzh Sargsyan: Change of power remains on RPA's agenda

Former Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan claims that the change of power remains on the Republican Party of Armenia’s (RPA) agenda and the most legitimate and optimal way to achieve it remains a parliamentary vote of no confidence in the prime minister – an impeachment.

Speaking to reporters ahead of a court hearing on Wednesday, Sargsyan addressed questions about reports that the RPA is considering impeachment proceedings and planning to initiate parliamentary hearings on the matter.

“The parliament is not only a place to speak, but also to listen. Those who have ears will hear. During such hearings, the speakers often include people who, though not MPs, rarely get the chance to address the National Assembly—maybe once every year or two,” Sargsyan said.

Referring to international developments, he drew a comparison with recent events. “Look at international practice. Just yesterday, two major events happened in the world – in Nepal and in France. One way of dealing with a government that no longer enjoys public trust is what happened in Nepal – violence and bloodshed. Another is the French way through parliament. Now the question is: what should we propose to the people?” Sargsyan noted.

When asked why he has not found common ground with Armenia’s second president, Robert Kocharyan, on this issue, Sargsyan responded briefly: "I have repeatedly asked you not to bring up questions regarding the second president."
