Azerbaijan's military buildup fuels doubts about peace process, says Armenian MP

Azerbaijan’s consistent military buildup raises serious doubts about its commitment to peace, warns Tigran Abrahamyan, an MP from the opposition Pativ Unem faction in the Armenian parliament.

Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Abrahamyan noted that alongside the launch of border delimitation talks, Azerbaijan has been reinforcing its positions in the areas where its troops previously seized.

He stressed that Baku is systematically expanding its military capabilities, including in the days leading up to and following the August 8 Washington agreements. “This fuels mistrust toward the peace process,” he said.

“Even under normal circumstances, Azerbaijan’s commitments and statements carry no real guarantees for the Armenian people. But today additional questions arise: how can Azerbaijan genuinely treat peace as an agenda item or view border delimitation as a framework for cooperation with Armenia, when it is conducting intensive fortification and engineering works in those sectors?” the MP asked.
