World Sepsis Day is observed annually on 13 September to raise global awareness about sepsis, a life-threatening condition where the body's response to an infection injures its own tissues and organs.
Sepsis can lead to organ failure and death if not recognized early and treated promptly. Sepsis is the final common pathway to death from most infectious diseases worldwide, including COVID-19.
World Sepsis Day was initiated by the Global Sepsis Alliance in 2012. In 2017, the World Health Assembly and the World Health Organization made sepsis a global health priority.
