Artsakh president sues education ministry over textbook claim

Artsakh President Samvel Shahramanyan has filed a lawsuit against Armenia’s Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports and historian Nzhdeh Hovsepyan, co-author of the 9th grade History of Armenia textbook.

The legal action challenges a passage in the textbook that states: “The President of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic signed a decree dissolving the republic.” Shahramanyan’s lawyer, Roman Yeritsyan, called the statement defamatory and submitted both the lawsuit and a request for interim measures.

As part of those measures, the plaintiff seeks to suspend teaching of the specific subsection in schools until a final court ruling is issued.

Yeritsyan had earlier announced plans to pursue legal remedies against the textbook’s authors, the education ministry and other responsible parties, demanding a retraction of what he described as false claims regarding the Artsakh president.
