Azerbaijan keeps war risk alive, warns Armenian analyst

Political analyst Suren Surenyants has warned that Azerbaijan’s refusal to finalize a peace agreement with Armenia leaves open the possibility of renewed conflict.

His comments came in response to a statement by Kristinne Grigoryan, head of Armenia’s Foreign Intelligence Service, who said that “at present we assess that military threats facing Armenia are very low, but there are threats to our democracy.”

In a social media post on Tuesday, Surenyants argued that the authorities are downplaying security risks and promoting an “illusion of peace”. He suggested the government’s approach fits into its broader anti-Russian rhetoric and reflects a willingness to accept terms set by Baku.

“The reality is different,” he said. “Armenia remains blockaded, part of its territory is occupied and Azerbaijan keeps the door to war open by refusing to sign a peace treaty. The main threat to our democracy, however, comes from the authoritarian tactics of the current leadership.”

He warned that a false sense of security is dangerous, emphasizing that Armenia's challenges are real and require responsible solutions.
