Georgia protests EU invitation at lower diplomatic level

Georgia’s Foreign Ministry has criticized the European External Action Service (EEAS) for inviting Tbilisi to an upcoming ministerial meeting in Luxembourg only at the level of ambassador, while Armenia and Azerbaijan received invitations for their foreign ministers, 1tv.ge reports.

In a statement on Tuesday, the ministry said the move shows “a lack of seriousness” from EU institutions and ignores both the geopolitical and geographic realities of the region.

The meeting on connectivity, scheduled for October 20, will bring together foreign ministers from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Turkey and Central Asian states, including Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan.

Tbilisi called the EU's decision to invite it to the meeting at the ambassador level “unacceptable” given Georgia's importance in regional connectivity.
