Levon Ter-Petrosyan to play key role in 2026 parliamentary elections, ally says

Former Armenian President Levon Ter-Petrosyan will play a significant role in the 2026 parliamentary elections, Levon Zurabyan, the deputy chair of his Armenian National Congress (ANC) party, told Sputnik Armenia on Friday.

Zurabyan cautioned against either overestimating or underestimating the elections, stressing that the primary goal is to create an alternative political force with a clear program and the ability to unite society into a broad nationwide movement.

When asked whether the ANC would lead this initiative, Zurabyan recalled the party’s historic role in achieving Armenia’s independence and governing the country for seven years. He emphasized that Ter-Petrosyan, as the founding president, remains responsible for the country’s trajectory, particularly after subsequent leaders abandoned his policy of pursuing peace through strength.

“Neither the founding president nor the political force he leads can remain indifferent to the current dire situation,” Zurabyan said.

The politician argued that no single party currently has the revolutionary momentum to spearhead such a movement, making cooperation essential. He stressed that any alliance must be based on pragmatic principles and a realistic peace agenda that balances Armenia’s geopolitical challenges while fostering economic growth and modernization.

Zurabyan also stressed the importance of safeguarding democracy, warning that the current political processes risk undermining it.

Armenia’s next parliamentary elections are scheduled for 7 June 2026.
