September 29 marks World Heart Day

World Heart Day is observed annually on September 29 to raise awareness about cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), which are a leading cause of death worldwide.

Established by the World Heart Federation (WHF) and the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1999, the day serves as a global call to action for heart health, encouraging individuals, communities and governments to adopt preventive practices, lifestyle changes and advocacy efforts to reduce the burden of heart disease.

The theme for World Heart Day 2025 is "Don't Miss a Beat", which encourages continuous vigilance for heart health and proactive care.

Major risk factors for CVDs include hypertension, diabetes, tobacco use, alcohol consumption, unhealthy diets high in salt and fats, and physical inactivity. As many as 85% of people living with hypertension and diabetes in the region do not have their conditions under control. Coupled with ageing populations and increasing urbanization, the vulnerability to CVDs is increasing, putting pressure on health systems that are already resource constrained.
