MP Mamijanyan urges action on Armenian prisoners in Azerbaijan

Armenian opposition lawmaker Hayk Mamijanyan said he was unable to raise his planned question during Tuesday's session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), but published it separately on Facebook, calling for urgent attention to Armenian prisoners held in Azerbaijan.

Mamijanyan, who leads the Pativ Unem faction, said he had intended to ask the PACE president, secretary-general and member states to instruct their ambassadors in Baku to visit Armenians imprisoned in Azerbaijan.

“Since the closure of the Red Cross office, we and their families have had no information about their condition. This is the very least you can do for them. Please act immediately to prove that Europe still believes in humanitarian values,” his statement read.

He said the session’s format allowed questions only from political groups, preventing individual MPs from addressing Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan during the debate.

Mamijanyan added he would continue to seek other channels to raise the issue.
