International legal action crucial to protect Armenian prisoners, expert claims

International legal proceedings are crucial and cannot be overlooked, claims Yeghishe Kirakosyan, the chair of the LLM Program in International Courts and Arbitration at Yerevan State University.

Speaking at Wednesday's discussion on the rights of Armenian prisoners held in Azerbaijan, Kirakosyan stressed that international judicial mechanisms serve as essential security guarantees.

“When you remove international legal processes from the broader picture, what remains are the Baku trials,” he said, adding that the proceedings in Azerbaijan are expected to continue with a “one-sided truth” being imposed.

Kirakosyan expressed hope that international legal action would be sustained, underlining its role in protecting the rights of Armenian prisoners.

“In my professional view, peace first and foremost requires direct addressing of humanitarian issues. That’s how I see it,” he said.
