First supermoon of 2025 will appear in the skies on October 6-7

The first supermoon of 2025 will shine over Armenia and much of the world on October 6 and 7.

According to Levon Azizyan, head of Armenia’s Hydrometeorology and Monitoring Center, the full moon will reach its peak on October 7 at 7:47 a.m. Yerevan time. Because the moon will be at its closest point to Earth in its orbit, it will appear larger and brighter than usual, up to 13% bigger and as much as 25% brighter than other full moons.

Both nights will offer excellent conditions for viewing across most of Armenia, with relatively low cloud cover.

This supermoon is part of a short seasonal series. The next ones will occur on November 5 and December 4, with a final “formal” supermoon on January 3. Though the brightness difference will be only a few percent, each will still offer a striking display.

October's full Moon is known as the Hunter's Moon but it is also this year's Harvest Moon. The Harvest Moon is the name given to the full Moon that rises closest to the autumn equinox, traditionally a time for gathering crops. It also rises around sunset for several evenings in succession creating extra light for farmers working outside.
