Serzh Sargsyan rejects Pashinyan's claims about Karabakh conflict

Former Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan has rejected Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s assertion that the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict was effectively resolved in 1991 under the Alma-Ata Declaration. Speaking to reporters ahead of a court hearing on Tuesday, Sargsyan said the declaration had “zero role” in the negotiation process during his tenure.

“Even the Azerbaijani authorities didn’t dare to use such an argument,” Sargsyan stated. “If everything was decided back then, why was the OSCE Minsk Group established? Why did its co-chairs continue to issue statements on how the process should move forward? If it was resolved, why were peace talks still taking place?”

Sargsyan also declined to comment on former President Robert Kocharyan’s latest remarks regarding the 2026 parliamentary elections, saying he had not watched the interview. Asked whether the Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) will run in the elections if impeachment efforts against Pashinyan fail, he replied: “We will announce our decision in due time.”
