Two independent Armenian MPs won't block impeachment effort, opposition leader says

Independent MPs Hovik Aghazaryan and Hakob Aslanyan, both expelled from Armenia's ruling Civil Contract party, will not obstruct an impeachment initiative against Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, opposition leader Hayk Mamijanyan announced.

At a parliament session on Tuesday, Mamijanyan, head of the Pativ Unem faction, presented the draft declaration on “national crisis and governance failure”, which accuses Pashinyan of mismanagement and calls for his removal through a vote of no confidence.

Mamijanyan noted that support for the motion had grown from 6 MPs in June to 34 in October, emphasizing that "broad public consolidation is essential for success".

However, Civil Contract faction head Hayk Konjoryan dismissed the initiative as “stillborn”, saying his faction would vote against it.

Aghazaryan confirmed meeting with Mamijanyan but said “many issues remain to be clarified”, adding that he and Aslanyan would abstain from the vote.

Ultimately, the declaration failed to be added to the parliament agenda with 24 votes in favor, 48 against and two abstentions.
