Lawyer Ruben Mkhitaryan placed in two-month detention

The Shirak Regional Court has ordered a two-month pretrial detention for lawyer and civic activist Ruben Mkhitaryan, a member of the Our Way (Mer Dzevov) movement.

Mkhitaryan, the son of the late weightlifting coach Ashot Mkhitaryan, was detained in Gyumri on 21 October. The movement said he was acting as a human rights defender, attempting to calm tensions at the Gyumri City Hall when police took him into custody.

Constitutional law expert Gohar Meloyan has condemned the detention as “unlawful”, arguing that it lacks any legal basis.
