Politician says October 27 Armenian parliament attack remains unsolved

Republic Party leader Aram Sargsyan claims that the 1999 parliament shooting cannot be considered solved until possible foreign involvement is fully investigated.

“Of course, October 27 has not been revealed,” Sargsyan, the brother of slain Prime Minister Vazgen Sargsyan, told reporters after laying flowers at the memorial to the victims outside the National Assembly on Monday.

“I’ve repeatedly stated that until possible foreign involvement is checked, the case cannot be regarded as solved,” he said.

Sargsyan added that even if foreign forces were involved, they could not have carried out the attack without internal assistance.

He noted that he had been questioned several times about the case, most recently two months ago.

Five gunmen led by Nairi Hunanyan burst into the Armenian parliament on October 27, 1999, killing Prime Minister Vazgen Sargsyan, Speaker Karen Demirchyan and six other officials.
