Vanadzor City Council set to convene soon, says Hayrenik faction leader

The Vanadzor City Council is set to hold a session in the coming days to elect a new mayor after a court-imposed ban was lifted, according to Vahe Dokhoyan, head of the Hayrenik faction.

In a statement on Wednesday, Dokhoyan said that Armenia’s Compulsory Enforcement Service officially terminated the legal proceedings that had prevented the council from convening since 2021.

Under the ruling, the municipal council must meet within 10 days to hold its inaugural session and elect a mayor within 14 days. Failure to do so would result in the council’s dissolution and new elections. Dokhoyan said the council’s administrative staff is legally required to organize the session, warning that inaction would constitute abuse of power.

He thanked the Direct Democracy NGO led by Gevorg Kotanjyan and media outlets for their support, adding that Hayrenik will now begin consultations with other council factions to determine next steps.
