Armenia’s population ages amid rising life expectancy

Armenia’s average life expectancy has reached 77.47 years, with women living up to 81, according to the latest national statistics. The trend reflects a global shift highlighted by the United Nations, which predicts that by 2050, one in six people worldwide will be aged over 65, up from one in eleven in 2019.

Experts at YSMU Heratsi Research Center warn that as societies age, industries from labor markets to healthcare and housing will have to adapt. A shrinking workforce could drive wage growth and accelerate the adoption of automation and AI tools to sustain productivity.

The aging population is expected to boost long-term growth in pharmaceuticals, medical equipment, diagnostics, rehabilitation and home care, while preventive medicine, telehealth and longevity treatments emerge as rapidly expanding fields.

Economically, retirees are shifting from wealth accumulation toward income generation and capital preservation, driving demand for senior housing and age-friendly infrastructure. Older consumers are spending more on health, wellness, travel and leisure and less on fast fashion and technology gadgets.

Globally, Europe dominates life expectancy rankings, with 16 of the top 25 longest-living nations. Monaco leads the list, with residents living an average of 86.5 years, and women exceeding 88.

Demographers cite declining birth rates, improved healthcare and greater female participation in education and the workforce as the main drivers of aging societies. The trend carries major implications: a smaller labor force, rising pension and healthcare costs and shifting family structures as more elderly people live alone.

Public health experts call for education, birth incentives and stronger social programs to support the elderly and promote active, healthy aging. While population aging presents economic and social challenges, they argue it can also be managed through informed policy and inclusive development.
