Opposition MP: Pashinyan and Aliyev 'burst the bubble' of their proclaimed peace

ARF Armenia leader and opposition MP Ishkhan Saghatelyan states that Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev have “burst the bubble” of their proclaimed peace, arguing that the August 8 peace agreement pre-signed by the foreign ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan failed to restrain Baku’s ambitions.

“What does it mean to endorse a document that doesn’t include a single clause restraining Azerbaijan’s demands or actions?” Saghatelyan, who represents the Hayastan faction, wrote on Facebook on Tuesday.

He highlighted that Azerbaijan had not recognized Armenia’s borders and continued to make new territorial claims against Armenia. The MP pointed to Aliyev’s statements referring to a transit road through Armenia’s Syunik Province as a “corridor” and calling Armenian society “sick”.

Saghatelyan accused Pashinyan’s government of “strengthening Aliyev’s position” by cutting military spending and the length of the military service, pushing for a change of Armenia’s constitution and discrediting critics as “revanchists”.

He urged the countries that welcomed the August 8 agreement to publicly condemn Aliyev’s territorial claims against Armenia, warning that otherwise their support would amount to endorsing new aggression against the country.
