Armenian MP decries politically motivated cases against Serzh Sargsyan
Opposition lawmaker Tigran Abrahamyan on Wednesday accused the Armenian authorities of pursuing politically motivated criminal cases against former President Serzh Sargsyan, calling the charges fabricated and groundless.
Abrahamyan, secretary of the Pativ Unem faction, stressed the criminal proceedings against Sargsyan have dragged on fruitlessly for more than seven years and serve only political objectives.
“The authorities are turning political persecutions of their critics into multi-episode operations involving police crackdowns and trials,” he wrote on Facebook, stating all cases lack any legal grounds.
“Despite the authorities’ efforts to involve 'staged characters' and add an artistic touch to the cases, they eventually collapse at some point,” Abrahamyan said. “The government's key purpose is to ensure the continuation of political cases and use them for propaganda purposes.”
