Armenian opposition MP questions economic growth as Georgia overtakes in GDP per capita

Armenian opposition MP Artur Khachatryan questioned the government’s economic performance, noting that despite “impressive” growth figures, Armenia's GDP per capita has fallen behind that of Georgia compared to 2019.

Citing recent IMF data, Khachatryan said Armenia's GDP per capita stands at $8,970, while Georgia’s has reached $10,130. “What happened that despite such remarkable growth rates, we are now behind Georgia compared to 2019?” he asked Finance Minister Vahe Hovhannisyan at a parliament session on Wednesday.

Hovhannisyan acknowledged Georgia’s strong recent performance, with growth expected at 9% this year, but highlighted that Armenia’s GDP per capita has doubled from $4,500 to $8,900 since 2018.

Khachatryan argued that Georgia achieved better results “through internal resources”, while Armenia benefited from “three years of external positive shocks”.

The minister rejected claims that Armenia’s economic growth was driven by sanctions against Russia.
