Armenia explains why it consulted Turkey on Arax River barrier project

Armenia has clarified why it has been discussing a planned embankment on the Arax River with Turkey despite a 1972 USSR-Turkey convention requiring only prior notification, not approval.

For more than a year, Yerevan has been sharing documents with Ankara about reinforcement work along the riverbank. Responding to a query from Sputnik Armenia on Saturday, the Foreign Ministry said Armenia had formally notified Turkey of the project in line with the treaty.

It added that additional contacts between the two sides take place “as necessary”, describing the exchanges as part of cooperation between neighboring countries.
