Foreign-language films in Armenia to screen with Armenian subtitles

Foreign-language films shown in cinemas across Armenia will now be required to include Armenian subtitles on the big screen in line with the country’s Law on Cinematography, the Cinema Foundation of Armenia reports.

The rule applies not only to theatrical releases but also to films distributed on television, online platforms and physical media. Officials say the measure aims to broaden access and increase audience engagement.

The initiative is being implemented by the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports and the Armenian Cinema Foundation in collaboration with international distributors.

Under the updated regulations, foreign-language films may be released only with a rental certificate, which now mandates clear and visible Armenian subtitles. Authorities say a next step will be the introduction of Armenian-language dubbing for foreign releases.
