Armenian drivers fined for non-standard sound systems

Armenian drivers are being fined for using non-standard car speakers and amplifiers following the enforcement of recent amendments backed by lawmakers from the ruling Civil Contract party.

Motorists reported on social media that dozens have been penalized, with some recounting that their vehicles were taken to impound lots after officers found subwoofers or additional speakers in the trunk, even when the audio system was not in use.

Under legislation adopted by the parliament on 2 October, installing non-standard mufflers, extra amplifiers or loudspeakers in vehicles is prohibited. Amendments to the Code of Administrative Offences introduce a fine equal to ten times the minimum monthly wage and two penalty points, along with seizure of the equipment.

Drivers have criticized the measure as excessive and unprecedented internationally, fuelling widespread debate and mockery online.
