Residents voice health concerns amid rising air pollution in Yerevan

Air pollution levels in Yerevan, particularly in the Kentron district, have risen sharply in recent weeks, prompting growing concern and frustration among residents.

During a street survey conducted by Panorama.am in the central district, citizens reported a range of health issues they believe are linked to deteriorating air quality.

“I’ve just arrived from Germany. This is my homeland and I want very much to live here, but the air quality is not good,” said one resident. “We arrived late at night and I already had to take medication because I felt unwell – nausea, headaches and dizziness. Every time I come to Armenia, my condition worsens.”

Another resident noted that during the summer months even a light breeze is enough to lift large clouds of dust, making the pollution visible.

“Especially in dry weather, I experience mild breathing difficulties and allergic reactions that I never had before. These symptoms have appeared only in recent years,” the resident said.

According to data from the Hydrometeorology and Monitoring Center, between 17 and 25 November dust concentrations in Yerevan’s air exceeded the maximum permissible limit by 1.4 to 4 times, with the highest levels recorded in Kentron. Nitrogen dioxide levels also surpassed permitted concentrations in the Kentron, Arabkir, Nor Nork and Shengavit districts. Sulphur dioxide levels remained within acceptable limits.
