Armenian MP calls for stricter measures against draft evasion

Independent MP Gegham Nazaryan has urged tougher action against young men seeking to evade mandatory military service amid plans to shorten the length of conscription.

Speaking at parliamentary debates on amendments to the military service law on Thursday, Nazaryan argued that the government must adopt a “more stringent” approach toward draft dodgers after the military service cut.

Nazaryan argued that, with the exception of individuals suffering from severe health conditions, all eligible men should be drafted. “There will always be an appropriate place in the system where they can fulfil their service,” he said.

The MP also called on the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports to review and update the school curriculum for the subject of Military Science.
