Armenian opposition activist suffers broken nose after assault, told to remain in hospital
Armenian opposition activist and former MP Mihran Hakobyan was assaulted by several masked men in the parking area of Yerevan’s Dalma Mall on Monday and later taken to Izmirlian Medical Center.
Lawyer Ruben Melikyan told reporters that the attack occurred between 13:00 and 13:30 and involved at least three assailants approaching Hakobyan from behind. Police investigators visited and questioned him at Izmirlian Medical Center. A criminal case has today been opened in connection with the incident.
The lawyer revealed that Hakobyan sustained a nasal fracture and other head injuries and underwent a medical procedure. Doctors advised him to remain in hospital for at least one day.
The lawyer said Hakobyan had no personal disputes and suggested the attack was likely linked to his public and political activities, citing his strong criticism of the government. Melikyan also recalled a previous 2021 incident in which an explosive device was thrown near Hakobyan’s home.
He said investigators have “a good opportunity” to identify the attackers given the circumstances of the case.
