Armenian MP: Pashinyan and Aliyev pursue the same goals

Opposition MP Tigran Abrahamyan reiterates that recent discussions around constitutional changes in Armenia are driven by Azerbaijan's demands rather than the Armenian government's initiative.

In a social media post on Thursday, Abrahamyan stated that both Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev "want the same thing". However, he claimed Pashinyan is framing the constitutional changes as an internal necessity to protect his political image.

“The entire fuss over constitutional changes in Armenia-Azerbaijan relations is that the Armenian leadership wants to present it as their initiative, while Azerbaijan constantly reminds them that it is acting on Baku’s demand,” Abrahamyan said.

He added that Azerbaijani authorities are well aware of the “role of false peace” for the Pashinyan government to secure reelection and are using the issue of constitutional changes to extract further concessions from Armenia.

“For the Armenian people, it is clear that the authorities are conceding their interests and key assets, which the government itself did not earn,” Abrahamyan wrote. “Azerbaijan is expanding its influence and opportunities by weakening the current Armenian leadership.”
