Opposition MP accuses EU diplomat of interfering in Armenia's internal affairs

Opposition lawmaker Ishkhan Saghatelyan has accused the European Union of interfering in Armenia’s internal affairs, following comments by the EU’s foreign policy chief about assistance ahead of Armenia’s next parliamentary elections.

In a social media post on Wednesday, Saghatelyan, a senior member of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation (ARF), said remarks by EU High Representative Kaja Kallas amounted to “direct and undisguised interference” in Armenia’s domestic political processes.

The MP argued that the comments pursued clear political objectives, including laying the groundwork to restrict or pressure opposition forces during the pre-election period and influencing voters’ political choices.

“An EU official is effectively declaring that, at the most sensitive stage, she will intervene in Armenia’s internal political processes, directly influencing the formation of the government,” he said, warning that such statements could encourage political pressure, abuses and prosecutions.

He called on all opposition parties to issue a clear and public response to external interference, stressing that “the Armenian people are the only subject entitled to form the government” and that any outside involvement pose a threat to national sovereignty.

His comments came after Kallas announced on Monday that Armenia’s government had requested EU assistance in relation to the 2026 elections.

“Armenia has elections coming, and what can we do to help them? They have asked similar help to fight the malign influence, like we granted to Moldova,” she said.
