Detained Armenian archbishops condemn 'intrusion' into Mother See

Two detained Armenian archbishops have condemned an “intrusion” into the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin as a “disgraceful” act in Armenia’s recent history.

On Thursday, a large number of people gathered inside and outside the Etchmiadzin cathedral to express support for Catholicos of All Armenians Karekin II as he faces mounting pressure from the government to resign. Riot police formed lines around the complex, separating the crowd from a smaller group of government supporters.

The pro-government demonstrators had gathered there following calls by ten senior clerics, who support Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s efforts to remove the church leader.

In a statement released from custody on Saturday, Archbishops Bagrat Galstanyan and Arshak Khachatryan criticized the clerics acting in line with the government and reaffirmed their loyalty to Catholicos Karekin II.

The archbishops praised the courage and steadfast faith of loyal clergy and believers, affirming that Armenian identity cannot be destroyed despite persecution.

“May God preserve the Holy Etchmiadzin, the wounded homeland and the Armenian people, dispelling darkness and despair and restoring hope,” reads the statement.
