Jailed Armenian archbishop undergoes surgery

Senior Armenian cleric Mikayel Ajapahyan has undergone surgery in a Yerevan hospital.

The leader of the Shirak Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church was operated on at the Izmirlian Medical Center on Friday, hospital representatives said.

He is currently being treated in the anaesthesiology, intensive care and surgical unit, where he is receiving post-operative care.

No further details about his condition have been released, with the hospital citing medical confidentiality.

Ajapahyan has recently been sentenced to two years in prison after being convicted of calling for a violent seizure of power in Armenia.

He has denied the charges as politically motivated.
