Armenian opposition party secretary arrested

Armenia’s Anti-Corruption Committee has arrested Khachik Galstyan, the secretary of the opposition Homeland Party, lawyers said early on Tuesday, calling the case politically motivated.

Arsen Babayan, a lawyer and associate of Galstyan, said in a Facebook post that investigators detained Galstyan on fabricated charges and were seeking his pre-trial detention.

“My friend Khachik Galstyan was arrested by the Anti-Corruption Committee on fabricated charges with the aim of placing him in custody. Political persecutions are continuing,” Babayan wrote.

Another lawyer, Sos Hakobyan, also a member of the Homeland Party, separately confirmed the arrest in a Facebook post, saying investigators from the Anti-Corruption Committee had detained Galstyan. He said further details would follow.
