Over 50,000 people sign petition demanding power price cut in Armenia

More than 50,000 people in Armenia have signed a petition calling for an immediate reduction in electricity prices, organizers from the Mer Dzevov (Our Way) movement said on Tuesday.

The petition demands a 3-dram cut in the household electricity tariff, arguing that improved efficiency at Armenia’s power distribution network has created sufficient savings to justify lower prices.

According to the organizers, reduced electricity losses in recent years have generated around 6 billion drams ($15 million) in savings in the system this year alone, making a price cut feasible without delay.

“This means electricity prices can be reduced right now,” the petition states.

Movement member Gohar Meloyan said the campaign has passed the 50,000-signature threshold but is entering a more active phase rather than stopping.

“The petition is ongoing. Citizens should assert their civic duty, because they are the source of power,” Meloyan said. “All the conditions exist — the funds, the economic calculations. What remains is to compel the authorities to show political will and reduce prices during the winter, not later ahead of elections.”

The petition remains open for signatures.
