Armenian MP slams opposition politician's detention as politically motivated

An Armenian opposition lawmaker says authorities have detained a senior party official solely for his political activities, calling the arrest part of a pattern of unlawful actions by the government.

In a social media post on Saturday, Tigran Abrahamyan, secretary of the opposition Pativ Unem faction, said he met with Khachik Galstyan, Secretary General of the Homeland Party, at the Armavir Penitentiary.

Abrahamyan said Galstyan’s detention reflects what he described as a continuing chain of government abuses targeting political opponents. Galstyan is currently being held in custody, which Abrahamyan said is exclusively due to his active political and party activity.

During the meeting, Galstyan asked Abrahamyan to convey New Year and Christmas greetings to Armenians.

“He assured that the authorities’ unlawful actions would not deter people from pursuing a just struggle and legitimate demands,” the MP added.
